Net.Art Navigator /Browser Art Browser, 1999 / 2025

Interactive media installation; computer: PC, operating system: Linux, custom software, rails, motorized flat screen, custom motor system, joystick, custom electronics, hardware dimensions: 100 cm x 1200 cm

The Net.Art Navigator is an extensive interface. It consists of a twelve-meter-long horizontal rail on which a motorized flat screen monitor is mounted. Visitors use a joystick to control it. Information is stored at certain points on its path along the wall, which can be viewed on the screen. It therefore depends on the position of the monitor which data is currently visible. The Net.Art Navigator is both analog and digital. Its content can be rearranged according to the individual exhibition. In Choose Your Filter! Shaw’s Navigator serves as a timeline, which visualises the development of artistic web browsers over the last 30 years. This is customised to the occasion and referred to as Browser Art Browser and designed by 2xGoldstein. This overview places the works on display in the exhibition within a larger context.
